Drawing on the ZSvirt Woodpecker testing project, this talk shares how to build an automated testing system for infrastructure that balances quality, efficiency, and community collaboration.

Open-source virtualization infrastructure typically spans compute, storage, networking, images, clusters, and a wide range of hardware environments. The hard part of testing it isn't just "is the feature correct" — it's how to stably and quickly surface real problems that span components and environments. Drawing on practice from the ZSvirt Woodpecker testing project, this talk shares how to build an automated testing system for infrastructure: from test-environment orchestration, layered test-case design, and fault injection, to model-based data-plane testing, result tracking, and failure localization. The focus is on transferable engineering methods that help open-source projects balance quality, efficiency, and community collaboration through rapid iteration.
